It is also used short-term to treat insomnia, or as a sedative before surgery." It works by slowing down the activity of the brain and nervous system. It is possible that those treated with this drug may experience many mild to severe side effects.

  1. Allergic Reaction

    • An allergic reaction is possible in those treated with phenobarbitone. As explained by drugs.com, symptoms include rash, hives, swelling of the mouth, lips, face and tongue, difficulty breathing, liver damage and confusion. Other symptoms that may occur during an allergic reaction are fainting, severe pain, very slow breathing, tightness in the chest and difficulty sleeping. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these symptoms occur.

    Side Effects - Nervous System/Respiratory

    • Common nervous system side effects reported by those taking phenobarbitone include drowsiness, sedation, lethargy, decrease in perception and the inability to due tasks that require lots of energy, states drugs.com. The site also reports that patients have experienced irritability, changes in behavior, thinking impairment, tics, involuntary movements, spasms of the eyeballs, muscle contractions and lack of coordination.     Side Effects - Musculoskeletal/Hypersensitivity

    • There are multiple musculoskeletal side effects that have been associated with the use of phenobarbitone. As stated by drugs.com, these have included "sympathetic dystrophy of the upper extremities, the 'shoulder-hand syndrome'," and joint pain (in up to five percent of patients). In proper function of muscle fibers has also been shown to occur while taking phenobarbitone. Hypersensitivity issues are rash, fever, derangements of the liver and inflammation of the kidneys, explains drugs.com.

    Side Effects -Oncologic/Dermatologic

    • Drugs.com explains that there may be a connection between phenobarbitone use and oncologic side effects, but others believe that there is not. Possible oncologic side effects include brain tumors, lung cancer and liver cancer. Dermatologic side effects, though not life threatening, can become irritable. As explained by drugs.com, these may include rash, itching of the skin, blistering of the skin and mucous membranes, red or purple blotches on the skin, sensitivity to sunlight and acne.

    Additional Side Effects

    • There are many other side effects that are associated with the use of phenobaritone. These have included irritation of the throat, enlargement of red blood cells, anemia and alterations in vitamin D metabolism, reports drugs.com. Low levels of calcium in the blood, softening of the bones, and Peyronie's disease (abnormal curve in the penis) have also been experienced by those treated with phenobarbitone. Increased levels thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) have also been reported states drugs.com.
